Plugging the Gaps: IDP Waiver Wire for Week 2
Don't get caught up in the recency bias: Washington linebacker Ryan Kerrigan is still really good in IDP fantasy football.

Devin McCourty, Safety

In most IDP leagues, the best safeties are coveted as premier defensive back options, treasured as priceless gems. They’re often no more consistent than any other option you can find on the waiver wire, however; by streaming your defensive backs and targeting matchups, you’re actually decreasing the likelihood of variance in your lineup.

New England Patriot Devin McCourty should prove an excellent option to help you secure the back end of your Week 2 IDP roster. McCourty picked up 10 total tackles in Week 1, both playing in run support in the tackle box and as the deep safety in coverage. The fortunate thing about New England’s scheme is that they flip their safeties, not locking each into the strong safety and free safety role, which typically allows an even distribution of tackle opportunities between the spots. The unfortunate thing about their scheme is that flipping safeties means there is less upside concentrated in one player.

Even so, if McCourty can rack up 10 tackles on the likes of the Arizona Cardinals, he can certainly do some damage against a much less-talented Miami Dolphins offense in Week 2. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill avoided interceptions in Week 1, but this week is as good a time as any to start. Add in an offensive line allowing the second-highest sack rate in the league through one week, and that’s a recipe for bad decisions in the passing game.

McCourty is available in 95.1% of ESPN IDP leagues, and we project him for 6.11 tackles, 0.18 interceptions, 0.26 passes defended, and a total score of 7.79 fantasy points in Week 2.
