Needs Entering Draft: WR, IOL, DE, DT
Positions Drafted: QB, RB, WR, DE, ILB, S
Talk about sending a message: the Kansas City Chiefs noted that quarterback Alex Smith is not long for this franchise by trading up a huge package to select Patrick Mahomes II in the top-10 of the draft. It was a pretty hefty deal for an uncertain talent at a position they didn’t have a near-term need. The Chiefs also whiffed on adding another interior offensive lineman and a new nose tackle in this class -- big concerns for their draft success. Safety/linebacker Leon McQuay III wasn’t a necessity, but teams are adding money-backers everywhere these days for sub-package value.
Running back Kareem Hunt was a sneaky value in the fourth round, and he could be ta big-time weapon down the line. Defensive end Tanoh “Triple Word Score” Kpassagnon is a physical marvel, and he will have a shot to replace Jaye Howard in 2018. Big and fast, Jehu Chesson adds another dangerous element to this passing game, and he can stretch the field. He’s the kind of mid-round receiver a team wants. Linebacker Ukeme Eligwe’s selection in the late fifth is a hedge on Derrick Johnson's health; he’s a good downhill player who can attack the ball.
