I'm old enough to remember when we all thought Jermaine Kearse was bad. Not this year. Unfortunately, not many people heeded Dale Redman's sleeper advice heading into Week 2. Kearse led the New York Jets wide receivers in Week 1 before posting the second-best total for any wide receiver in Week 2.
How important is Kearse to the Jets offense? Consider that only four Jets have posted a positive Net Expected Points (NEP) number, and Kearse's 4.54 Total NEP is greater than the other three players combined. Not only did nearly 46 percent of New York's air yards go to Kearse, but he also commanded 20 percent of the team's targets and 39 percent of their receiving yards.
He's done all this despite joining the team late in the preseason, too.
At this point, Kearse certainly appears locked in as a top target at wide receiver. Only Robby Anderson (12 targets) has come close to matching his involvement. Kearse's upside is limited by the Jets' poor offense, but volume still counts. He should be rostered in 12-team leagues and could be a viable spot starter. Keep an eye on his workload, though -- tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins returns from suspension for Week 3 and could eat into some of those targets.
