The San Francisco 49ers announced that Matt Breida will not be available to play this week, so Jeff Wilson will be the starter once again.
This will not be the first time Wilson will be starting for Breida. In Week 14, he played 86% of snaps with 23 carries and 2 targets against the Denver Broncos. His overall market share of running back carries was 92% in that one. In the week prior, Wilson handled 71% of the snaps with 23 touches, 7 of which were catches. Matt Dayes is expected to be Wilson's backup, and Dayes didn't log a snap in Week 16 while Wilson handled 38 of 55 snaps in Breida's absence in a tough matchup against the Chicago Bears.
While Wilson has limited volume within the passing game, it's important to note that the team will be without its top-two receivers in Week 17. The team ruled out Dante Pettis and Marquise Goodwin, leaving the 49ers' thin on receiving options. In the Week 13 game in which the 49ers were also missing Goodwin, Wilson tied George Kittle in targets with nine. With an additional receiver out this week, Wilson should be a factor in the passing game.
Wilson will be one of the few running backs under $5,000 who is sliding into a high-volume role. Our models currently project Wilson as the second-best value running back within that price range.
