There are some monster over/unders in the divisional round this weekend, but the lowest one belongs to the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers, sporting a total of only 47.0 points. But with the Pats sporting a mediocre 18th-ranked pass defense, per our metrics, could Philip Rivers be in a solid spot to deliver?
It may actually be the opposite. The Chargers are sporting an implied team total of only 21.5 points, and that's partly due to a New England that has been quite solid in Gillette Stadium this season. While they went only 3-5 on the road this year, allowing an average of 24.0 points per game, that unit tightened up significantly in Boston, yielding 16.6 points per game. That includes 40 points to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs -- without that game, they allowed 13.3 points per game.
The Chargers pace won't do them any favors, either. They rank only 16th in situation-neutral pace, and if they get down big, that bodes even worse for Rivers, as they rank second-worst in pace when trailing in this situation (2.95 seconds per play).
With so many solid, high-powered options available this weekend, Rivers is one we should consider fading.
