The quarterback run has finally started here in the ninth round, as three signal-callers come off the board in quick succession. Cam Newton is numberFire's pick for the best quarterback after the "big three," so obviously that seems like the best value at this point in the draft, but all three passers taken could pay huge dividends for those who took them.
There's also a mini tight end run in this round, as three players in four picks came from that position. Again, with most drafters waiting on the position for eight rounds and filling out other roster spots, it makes sense to see a few runs at the position later on the in draft. Our projections prefer Witten to Reed, and Reed to Pitta, but at this point in the draft they're all worth picking to start at the position.
My pick: Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit Lions - I was able to grab numberFire's number six quarterback here in the ninth round, and I couldn't be happier. Stafford's volume is as guaranteed as any quarterback's in the NFL, as the pass-happy Lions figure to give Stafford hundreds of opportunities to get the ball into the hands of playmakers and earn fantasy points. Having taken eight running backs and wide receivers ahead of him, I was confident in my depth, and now have a quarterback I can start every week and expect a top-12 performance on a weekly basis.
