The deepest of deep sleepers, Lions running back Zach Zenner has flashed the type of talent this preseason that warrants attention.
Over three preseason games, Zenner has amassed 162 yards on the ground on just 25 attempts (6.5 yards per carry), 60 yards in the passing game on 6 receptions, and two total touchdowns.
Most encouragingly, on a night when Zenner hung 85 yards and a touchdown on just 8 carries against the Redskins in the Lions preseason dress rehearsal, Zenner found himself mixing in with the first-team offense, which suggests the coaching staff sees him as more than just insurance to the more heralded rookie Ameer Abdullah and oft-injured Joique Bell.
A hard-nosed runner with a stout 5' 11", 223-pound frame, with Bell still recovering from offseason knee and Achilles surgeries, Zenner could play the "thunder" to fellow rookie Abdullah's "lightning."
Keep a close eye on Zenner this season and be ready to pick him up if either of the backs ahead of him on the depth charts go down to injury or if his role is expanded as a result of his ability to pick up the tough yards between the tackles for the Lions.
