Players to target: Andreas Athanasiou, Darren Helm, and Thomas Vanek
This line will not be popular, but it is worth the risk because of the talent of the individual players.
While there is no data on these three playing together, they each attempt their fair share of shots. Athanasiou's Individual Corsi For per 60 minutes is 19.1, Vanek's is 13.3, and Helm's is 11.6. While Athanasiou is inexplicably not on the power play for the Red Wings, he will play on the penalty kill. That gives him better chances to use his speed for breakaway chances.
The New York Islanders' top line of John Tavares will be matched up with Henrik Zetterberg's and Frans Nielsen's lines, allowing Helm and co. to have some great offensive matchups.
The second line for the Islanders is allowing 56.8 Corsi Against per 60 minutes and the third line is allowing a whopping 67.5 Corsi Against per 60 minutes. Add in an average New York penalty kill (80.3%), and this third line for Detroit is set up to do some damage at a low cost and low ownership.
