Tanner Roark is a solid starting pitcher, but he has failed to consistently strike out left-handed batters throughout his career. He has just a 16.0% strikeout rate against lefties in his career, and they have recorded a .319 wOBA against him. Roark is much better against right-handed hitters, holding them to a .269 wOBA.
That makes Roark, all other things being equal, a pitcher to target when he is facing a lineup full of right-handed batters and one to fade when he is facing a team that features plenty of lefty bats.
Unfortunately for him, the Atlanta Braves should have a lineup loaded with lefties. Most of Atlanta's best hitters -- including Freddie Freeman, Nick Markakis, Ender Inciarte, and Ozzie Albies -- will bat from the left side of the plate against Roark. While it is obviously a small sample, the Braves are second in the majors this season with a .333 wOBA against right-handed pitching, and Freeman mashed his way to a .422 wOBA versus righties in 2017.
