Carlos Martinez hasn’t pitched as well in 2016 as he did a year ago, regressing significantly in K/9, swinging strike percentage, hard hit rate and xFIP. And while he started his season out with five straight outings of six or more innings, he hasn’t completed more than five innings in each of his last four starts. However, during that stretch, he faced a murderer’s row of offenses -- the Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Despite his recent lackluster performance, there are two reasons for optimism today. -- his sustained 53.9% ground-ball rate to help limit damage and his matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Martinez will have an opportunity to rack up the strikeouts in this matchup as the Brewers own the worst strikeout rate in the league against right-handed pitching at 27%.
Martinez is just a -120 favorite on the road today, and given his recent performance, he’s much more suitable for GPPs than cash games.
