The Green Bay Packers shocked the fantasy football world in 2016 when they realized that they didn’t have any good or healthy running backs and instead converted their mediocre slot receiver, Ty Montgomery, into a backfield option. He rewarded them with an electric 5.9 yards per rushing attempt on 77 rushes, while maintaining a reasonable 7.9 yards per reception on 56 targets. Since then, the Packers have invested in their backfield by drafting Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones, and Montgomery was pushed off to the side as mainly a kick returner and special teams player.
In Week 2, it looked like the Packers would start to give one of their most dynamic players a chance to, you know, make plays again, when TyMo got 5 carries and took them for 31 yards (6.2 yards per attempt).
However, unfortunately for Montgomery, explosive backfield burner Aaron Jones is set to return from suspension next week and become the other half of Williams once more for the Packers. With Jones out, the Pack had kept just three running backs on their roster, and Montgomery was the obvious choice for second-string. Jones will immediately push Montgomery from that role and may even unseat Williams.
With at least four receivers ahead of him and a spot no higher than third on the running back depth chart, Montgomery just won’t see enough playing time to make holding him worth your while.
