A good tight end has been hard to find, and for two straight weeks this season, Austin Hooper looked like the real deal. In back-to-back weeks, he posted nine receptions on double-digit targets. Those are fantastic numbers for wide receivers, let alone tight ends.
But he fell back down to earth in Week 7 before heading into the Atlanta Falcons Week 8 bye, and the reason seems relatively obvious -- Calvin Ridley and Mohamed Sanu were healthy again. Hooper's 12-target game in Week 5 seemed fluky when it happened, (prior to that week he'd never had a game with double-digit targets), but when it happened again in Week 6, it looked like a trend was developing.
What's more likely is that Hooper benefited from Ridley's absence and Sanu's limitations in that game, because when Ridley returned the following week, Hooper managed just four targets. Not to mention the fact that his two big games came against teams allowing the most and the third-most fantasy points to opposing tight ends.
His upcoming schedule is less friendly to tight ends, and Ridley and Sanu had the bye week to get healthy, meaning it's unlikely that Hooper regains his elite target share from Weeks 5 and 6. For the first time in what feels like years, there are other decent tight end options out there on the waiver wire this week. That makes Hooper a drop candidate.
