Fantasy Baseball: 5 Strike Throwers Who Could Break Out in 2017
Taijuan Walker, Arizona Diamonbacks
First-Pitch Strike Rate: 63.7% (Rank: 32nd)
Swinging Strike Rate: 10.0%
In one of the biggest deals this offseason, the Arizona Diamondbacks sent Jean Segura to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for starting pitcher Taijuan Walker as part of a five-player swap.
At first glance, this looks like a lopsided trade in favor of the Mariners. In 134 1/3 innings pitched last season, Walker racked up a 4.22 ERA, and he allowed a whopping 1.81 home runs per nine innings pitched (HR/9).
But the big-time prospect hasn't lost all his shine, and perhaps an injury last year was to blame -- Walker pitched with a reported 10 bone spurs in his right foot.
Walker throws a ton of strikes and has historically done a nice job of limiting the long ball -- for his career, over 833 innings pitched, Walker's allowed 1.03 HR/9. If he can regain some of that form and keep pounding the zone, he could have a big season out in the desert.
