Teams Ranked 20th to 11th

After a solid first week, it didn't take long for a couple of rebuilding clubs to already start seeing some negative regression.

Rank Team nERD Record Playoff Odds Change
20 Los Angeles Angels -0.34 6-8 9.80% -18
19 Chicago White Sox -0.31 6-6 8.60% -9
18 Baltimore Orioles -0.29 8-3 41.80% +8
17 Miami Marlins -0.14 7-6 30.90% 0
16 Detroit Tigers -0.07 8-4 44.80% -4
15 San Francisco Giants -0.06 5-9 43.60% +1
14 Tampa Bay Rays 0.04 6-8 10.40% -5
13 Arizona Diamondbacks 0.19 9-5 26.30% -8
12 New York Mets 0.28 7-6 47.50% +10

Biggest Rise: New York Mets

As mentioned before, the Mets had a great time in Philadelphia while slugging their way to a three-game sweep, and it looked like more of the same upon arriving in South Beach to face the Miami Marlins. After Travis d'Arnaud helped New York secure a victory in the 16-inning series opener, they proceeded to drop the final three games of this head-to-head matchup, letting each of the games slip away in the late innings.

Mets starting pitchers did post a 4.37 ERA over the past week, but their 2.96 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) shows they performed much better than the results say. Their cumulative 0.8 fWAR was the fifth-highest total, while their 9.51 strikeouts per nine innings ranked sixth.

Biggest Drop: Los Angeles Angels

When we saw the Los Angeles Angels finish second to only the Los Angeles Dodgers in last week's power rankings, we knew that wouldn't last very long. Mike Trout is amazing and all, but he's just one guy and he doesn't pitch.

The Angels are currently on a six-game losing streak and have watched their nERD tumble from 2.28 to -0.34. That's such a steep drop that's it's actually kind of impressive. Unfortunately for them, they've also watched their playoff odds crater during this time -- last week, there was a 30.0% chance of them playing beyond the regular season, but it's currently just 9.8%.
