Re-Drafting the 2010 MLB Draft Using Advanced Analytics
3 Busts
If we were to conduct a redo today, which players would fall furthest from the ranks of the top selections?
Player | Position | WAR | Actual Pick | Re-Draft Pick | Difference |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Barret Loux | RHP | N/A | 6 | 31 | 25 |
Karsten Whitson | RHP | N/A | 9 | 31 | 22 |
Michael Choice | OF | -2.3 | 10 | 30 | 20 |
Of these three, two never saw a major league diamond. One of those was sixth overall pick, Barret Loux, who never made it past Triple-A. The righty's best season came in 2012 when he went 14-1 with a 3.47 earned run average with the Texas Rangers' Double-A affiliate.
Fellow right-handed pitcher Karsten Whitson didn't even make it that far. He was picked by the San Diego Padres but he never signed. Instead, he went on to college and was selected in the 37th round in 2013 for which he played just a single season of Single-A ball.
Michael Choice, on the other hand, did make the majors, yet he returned nothing in terms of positive value. In a short three-year career, Choice produced just nine home runs in 96 games spread across two different clubs.
