4 Under-the-Radar Daily Fantasy Baseball Plays for 5/11/17
Justin Smoak, 1B, Toronto Blue Jays
FanDuel Price: $2,700
Why He Will Go Overlooked:
Colorado Rockies starter Tyler Anderson has really struggled to start the year -- over 36 1/3 innings pitched, he's posted a 6.69 ERA while both lefties (.395 wOBA) and righties (.398 wOBA) have enjoyed facing him. Red-hot rookie Cody Bellinger, who's filling in more than admirably for the injured Adrian Gonzalez, is sure to be a heavily-owned option. He's socked four homers in his last five games.
The Toronto Blue Jays offense seems to have fallen off a cliff in 2017 -- they rank only 25th in team wOBA (.293), and are striking out 22.8% of the time. As a result, Justin Smoak is not likely to be a heavily played option.
Why You Should Use Him:
Despite their struggles to begin the year, the Jays may be able to turn things around against Seattle Mariners starter Chase De Jong, who's been pretty bad this season.
Working both as a starter and a reliever, De Jong has racked up a 5.90 SIERA over 13 1/3 innings pitched, and his strikeout rate (10.2%) barely eclipses his walk rate (8.5%).
Another pain point for De Jong has been left-handed bats -- in 31 total batters faced, they've rocked him for a .438 wOBA 37.0% hard-hit rate.
One other added bonus of this match up is the location -- Smoak and his buddies should take advantage of the Rogers Centre, which has been pretty homer happy over the last three seasons, ranking eighth-best in the league.
At a pretty low price point, Smoak gives you cheap exposure with big upside potential.
