Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Carlos Santana has been one of the unluckiest hitters in baseball so far this year, with a BABIP of .125 -- tied for third-worst in the league -- and, as a result, has yielded a slash line of .136/.260/.288, way off his career .247/.363/.443 marks. And yet Santana is drawing walks as much as he ever has (15.1% this year), and his strikeout rate is right in line with his career average, too (16.4%).

Plate discipline is not an issue for Santana, but neither is contact. He's hitting the ball really hard, with a hard-hit rate of 40.0%, the highest of his career. And lest you think his BABIP is the result of him hitting a bunch of grounders into the shift, think again. Santana's career average ground-ball percentage is 42.1%, but this year just 30.0% of his balls in play are on the ground. A whopping 54.0% of his batted balls have been hit in the air, which when combined with his outstanding hard hit rate, means he should be getting a bunch of extra-base hits and dingers.

So far, that hasn't happened. But the numbers say that it will.
