3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Players to Avoid on 5/14/18
Josh Reddick, OF, Houston Astros
FanDuel Price: $2,800
Josh Reddick's clutch play and strong bat against right-handed pitching was a big reason the Houston Astros were able to win the World Series in 2017. He's an important player for them, because he is one of the few left-handed bats they have.
However, that makes him an avoid when he is facing a left-handed pitcher. As good as he is against right-handed pitching, he's decidedly below average against southpaws. Against lefties in his career, he has posted a 81 wRC+ and 26.0% hard-hit rate.
Moreover, on Monday, he is facing Andrew Heaney, who is quietly enjoying a bit of a breakout season. Heaney has a 3.63 SIERA thanks to a 11.0% swinging-strike rate. It is still a small sample with Heaney, but he was a high-end pitching prospect and he's shown flashes in the past (swinging-strike rates of 12.6% and 13.5%, respectively, in 2016 and 2017). That makes it a little easier to buy in on Heaney even though we are still at fewer than 30 innings with him so far in 2018.
He's also been phenomenal against left-handed hitters in his career. It's still a small sample at just over 50 innings of work against left-handed hitters, but the results are truly phenomenal. He has held them to a .274 wOBA, 21.8% strikeout rate, 28.3% fly-ball rate, and 27.2% hard-hit rate. Reddick should struggle against Heaney, and thus he isn't worth rostering.
