3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Monday 8/8/22

The Cubs have a solid matchup at Wrigley tonight. Which other top offenses should we target on Monday's slate?

Stacks are an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. They can push a team to the top of a GPP by driving upside. However, they're also viable in cash games, namely smaller (two-person or three-person) stacks that mitigate the volatility of a full four-person stack.

This article is your home throughout the 2022 Major League Baseball season for the day's top stacks. The primary goal is to identify the highest-scoring upside stack. Still, game theory will play a role in contrarian stacks making the cut as GPP options. Nevertheless, chalky stacks will make appearances in this space, too.

Beyond my analysis in this space, I strongly suggest numberFire premium members using our DFS Sharpstack tool and hitting heat map tool. The DFS Sharpstack helps plug stacks into optimized lineups, allowing you to change parameters and lock or exclude players and teams. Meanwhile, the heat map offers a one-stop-shop for the opposing starting pitcher, implied total, park factor, and other notable goodies.

Now, let's look at the top stacks on today's main slate.

New York Mets

The New York Mets have a golden opportunity for an offensive eruption tonight. Justin Dunn is making his first big-league start this year after opening the year on the 60-day Injured List. Sadly, he's been a wreck in Triple-A. According to FanGraphs, in seven starts totaling 26 innings, Dunn has had a 6.92 ERA, 6.09 xFIP, 1.81 WHIP, 12.4 percent walk rate, and allowed 1.38 homers per nine innings.

In addition, Dunn was extremely lucky last year. In 11 starts spanning 50 and 1/3 innings for the Seattle Mariners, he had a 3.75 ERA that was markedly better than his 5.61 xFIP. Further, the Cincinnati Reds' bullpen is the worst in MLB, owning a 5.04 ERA.

The Mets are stackable from the top of the order through the bottom. Brandon Nimmo ($3,200) is an attractive option right out of the chute. He's had a .370 OBP and 131 wRC+ in 552 plate appearances against righties since 2021. However, my favorite pick from the Mets is Dan Vogelbach ($3,000). The burly slugger has had a .381 OBP, .224 ISO, and 139 wRC+ against righties since 2021.

Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays will take cuts against a below-average righty tonight. Jordan Lyles has had a 4.40 ERA and 4.45 xFIP in 22 starts totaling 124 and 2/3 innings in 2022. He's also been slightly worse lately, ceding a 4.52 ERA and 4.87 xFIP in his last dozen starts.

Thankfully, the righty-leaning lineup construction for the Blue Jays won't be a problem. Lyles has allowed a .318 wOBA to righties in 2022. Further, he's coughed up a .331 wOBA to righties in his career. So, the Blue Jays shouldn't have much trouble with Lyles tonight.

I prefer to stack from the top of Toronto's order. Some of my favorite options are Lourdes Gurriel ($2,900), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ($4,300), Alejandro Kirk ($3,000), and Teoscar Hernandez ($3,800), the projected top-four hitters. When factoring in salaries, I'm most enamored with Gurriel and Kirk. Since last year, the former has had a 120 wRC+, and the latter has had a 125 wRC+ against righties.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are the next team to draw thoroughly washed-up Anibal Sanchez. The veteran righty sat out the 2021 season after recording a 6.62 ERA and 5.30 xFIP in 2020. This year, Sanchez has been hammered for a 7.65 ERA and 5.27 xFIP in our starts totaling 20 innings. So, in Sanchez's last 73 innings, he's had a 6.90 ERA and 5.29 xFIP, allowing 2.10 homers per nine innings.

Thankfully, the Washington Nationals' relievers add to the appeal of stacking the Cubs. Washington has had the seventh-highest bullpen ERA (4.28) this year. As a result, the Cubs can score runs throughout the entire game.

The Cubs are stackable from the first through the ninth hitter. Still, one of my favorite options is Patrick Wisdom ($3,100). The slugger has had a .248 ISO against righties since last year. Additionally, Sanchez has allowed a blistering .447 wOBA to right-handed batters this season.
