3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Hitters to Avoid on 5/31/16

As is the case in most daily fantasy sports, finding information on players you might want to roster is a lot easier than finding players to avoid.

While you can get away with a zero from a hitter in daily fantasy, you certainly don't want to target guys whose matchups aren't enticing.

Here are three hitters you may want to lessen your exposure to or even fade altogether on Tuesday.

Justin Turner, 3B, Los Angeles Dodgers

Justin Turner has cooled off some from his hot hitting stretch in the middle of May, and tonight he faces another tough battle as the Dodgers head into Wrigley Field to play Jake Arrieta and the Cubs. While the Cubs’ ace has looked human in some of his most recent starts, he's also still been dominant. Tonight against the Cubs, Turner may be one of the bigger landmines in the Dodgers’ lineup.

Turner usually doesn’t struggle as much against pitchers of the same handedness, but for some reason this season, Turner has had trouble with right-handed pitchers. Through 127 at-bats this season, Turner’s wOBA against righties is .276, and his ISO drops a lot too, going from .184 against lefties to .087 against righties. His strikeout rate is also higher against righties this season at 17.9 percent.

Arrieta’s dominance has been well documented this season. His wOBA against righties through 157 batters is only .190, and his strikeout rate is 27.4 percent. He's walking righties four percentage points less than lefties, and his hard-hit rate against righties is below 20 percent. If Arrieta is at his best, Turner is probably someone you should avoid tonight.

Francisco Cervelli, C, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates head back into Marlins Park tonight for the second game of their series with the fish, but tonight they head into the lion’s den to face off against Miami’s ace, Jose Fernandez. While Fernandez has not been pitching late into games, for the first few times through the Pirates order, he's going to be a formidable matchup for several Pirates, including Francisco Cervelli.

Cervelli has a wOBA against right-handers of .291 this season through 121 at-bats, and this year his strikeout rate against righties has gone up over 20 percent. His hard-hit rate also plummets against righties this season down to 22.3 percent, compared to 40.6 percent against left-handed pitching. For his career, his fly-ball and hard-hit rates are both several percentage points lower against righties, and with Fernandez on the hill, it might get even harder for Cervelli to pay off his price tag.

Fernandez has a wOBA against righties of .240 this season through 129 at-bats, and even more impressive is his strikeout rate of 46.5 percent against right-handers this season. While Fernandez is still only pitching into the seventh inning in his starts, his numbers are slowly getting back to his career averages. His career wOBA against righties is only .211, and his career BABIP against righties is .247. It might be best to look for other options at catcher with Cervelli in a pitchers park and against Fernandez.

Jayson Werth, OF, Washington Nationals

Jayson Werth has recently spent some time towards the top of the Nationals order, but it still hasn't helped his prospects against right-handed pitchers. He did have a pinch-hit grand slam two games ago, but considering he wasn’t in the starting lineup, it probably helped very few -- if any -- fantasy owners. Tonight, it might help to not roster Werth, because not only is he not hitting right-handers this season, his matchup tonight against Phillies’ young hurler, Aaron Nola, is not the greatest.

Nola has been great so far for the Phillies this season. His wOBA against righties is .236 through 141 total batters faced, and his strike out rate is 29.1 percent. He is walking right-handers at a rate of only 2.1 percent, and his hard hit rate is only 18.8 percent against righties. While these are all small sample sizes, with the way Nola is pitching, Werth looks like a player to avoid.

Werth has a wOBA of only .243 against righties this season through 134 at-bats, and his power numbers have dropped significantly. His ISO against righties this season is .119, compared to .371 against lefties, and his BABIP drops nearly 100 points to .237 against righties this season. Werth had a lot of trouble against righties last season as well, posting a wOBA of .293 through 253 at-bats. If this is a trend that continues, Werth is not a great guy to target on Tuesday.
