Mets' Justin Verlander (shoulder) making season debut Thursday
New York Mets starting pitcher Justin Verlander (shoulder) is scheduled to make his season debut on Thursday versus the Detroit Tigers, per manager Buck Showalter.
Verlander missed the beginning of the season with a low-grade teres major strain. The 40-year-old right-hander signed a two-year, $86.67 million contract with the Mets over the winter. Max Scherzer is scheduled to start Wednesday in his return from suspension and Kodai Senga is penciled in for Friday's series opener against the Colorado Rockies.
numberFire's models project Verlander to score 36.4 FanDuel points in his season debut. Our models expect him to record a 3.24 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 169 strikeouts and 42 walks over 161 innings in 2023. Last year, Verlander recorded a spectacular 1.75 ERA and 0.83 WHIP, with 185 strikeouts and 29 walks, across 175 innings (28 starts) for the Houston Astros in his return from Tommy John surgery.
