When we think about the best teams in NBA history, we first think of Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls, Magic Johnson's Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird's Boston Celtics. But those teams were prominent in the '80s and '90s -- what about more recent years?

There are many ways to find if that's true or not. Wins, win percentage and point differential are just a few, but our nERD metric measures a team's on-court performance in and of itself. It is a team ranking -- on a scale of 0 to 100 -- that is predictive of a team's ultimate winning percentage for the season. nERD dates back to 2000, so it allows us to compare the last 18 teams for each NBA franchise.
