The 10 Best College Football Teams to Not Win a National Championship Since 2000

Which of this century's great teams have fallen short of the ultimate goal?

In case you missed it, the other day I wrote something on the what-ifs of an eight-team College Football Playoff. The biggest takeaway from it? Alabama is really good.

According to our power rankings, the Crimson Tide are the best team in the nation, with a nERD of 37.09 -- meaning that we would expect them to beat an average team at a neutral field by an estimated 37 points. However, in comparison to the other top teams in the nation, they aren't that far ahead. As a matter of fact, Ohio State (36.44) and Michigan (35.26) within five points of Nick Saban's squad.

That means that, no matter what, two teams will join this list of the best teams (since 2000) who didn't win a national title by season's end. But, for now, which teams occupy it?

The top-10 are sorted by nERD, from lowest to highest (10 to 1), back to the 2000-2001 season, when numberFire first started tracking the metric.
