The Cleveland Browns came into the NFL Draft with a no-doubt, slam-dunk option waiting for them at the first overall pick in defensive end Myles Garrett; all they had to do was not overthink it. As we know now, they didn’t, and they grabbed a player who finds himself compared to Khalil Mack, DeMarcus Ware, and Clay Matthews.
They also were able to grab an undervalued cornerback in Howard Wilson, who will get time to work up to starting level, while boosting the defensive line with true defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. Hometown hero DeShone Kizer will step into immediate competition for the starting quarterback job, as well.
The two areas the Browns didn’t address were wide receiver and inside linebacker, two spots where I thought they would try to find more help in the draft. It was a notoriously weak receiver class overall, though, so I don’t blame them for seeing tight end David Njoku as their best option to get an impact pass-catcher. With the depth of remaining 2016 rookies in the wideout group, too, they may have felt comfortable not spending a pick here.
