Opportunity knocked, Washington answered. Defensive end Jonathan Allen wasn’t exactly the kind of defensive lineman I saw Washington taking in this draft, but a top-three talent falling to them is exactly the kind of value you don’t pass up at 17th overall. Ryan Anderson is another perfect fit at the perfect price, and they are very fortunate to have a big-time edge-setter at strong-side outside linebacker now. Cornerback Fabian Moreau will need some time to get healthy and back up to speed, but he’s also a nice value in the third. Samaje Perine will upgrade on Rob Kelley; he’s basically the same back, but faster and with more receiving chops. They nailed their first four picks.

Washington got a little bit weird later in the draft. Free agent Zach Brown fills the coverage inside linebacker spot, so they didn’t need to reach on one, but more second-level depth would have helped. Safeties Montae Nicholson and Josh Harvey-Clemons weren’t immediate needs, but their presence does help for a nearing DeAngelo Hall-less future. Tight end Jeremy Sprinkle and wide receiver Robert Davis certainly weren’t needs, but pass-catching depth is never something to sniff at.
