Jared Goff, QB, Los Angeles Rams
DraftKings Price: $4,800
Let's not beat around the bush -- Jared Goff was terrible last year. Abhorrent. Abominable. Atrocious. Add your favorite synonym here.
His -0.28 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back were the lowest of any quarterback with at least 30 drop backs. The good thing is, he can only improve. If the preseason is any indication, he is well on his way to doing so.
Goff completed 75% of his passes in the preseason as the Los Angeles Rams looked surprisingly solid. While he did commit a couple of turnovers, the 75% completion percentage is up from an ugly 44.9% clip from 2016. He also upped his yards per attempt from 4.7 last year to 7.8 this preseason.
While preseason stats need to be taken with a grain of salt, the jumps in these numbers are dramatic and show that there may be some light at the end of the tunnel for Goff.
In Week 1, the Rams get an Indianapolis Colts defense that will be without Vontae Davis. The Colts were noticeably worse without Davis last year. For the season, their Adjusted Defensive Passing NEP per play mark was 0.21, much worse than the league average of 0.12. Without Davis in Week 1 and Week 2, that number skyrocketed to 0.40 and 0.28, respectively, in the two contests.
If Goff is going to have a good year, it would behoove him to take advantage of a great matchup in Week 1. With a salary of only $4,800, he's not going to have to do a lot to come through if you decide to roster him. He's difficult to trust in cash games, but he has appeal as a contrarian and cheap tounrey play.
