Fantasy Football: 3 Players You Can Drop After Week 15
Sammy Watkins, WR, Los Angeles Rams
Yahoo Ownership: 85%
Sammy Watkins' first season with the Los Angeles Rams has been incredibly disappointing from a fantasy football perspective. At the time of his trade in August, Watkins' move to L.A. seemed a bit like a lateral move or even a slight downgrade,. After all, he was moving from a low-volume offense with the Buffalo Bills to another assumed low-volume offense, with second-year quarterback Jared Goff coming off of a horrendous rookie year.
But new head coach Sean McVay has engineered an amazing offensive turnaround in the City of Angels. Yet, somehow, Watkins has been, at best, the fourth-most reliable option in one of the league's best offenses. In fact, Watkins' targets, receptions, and receiving yards numbers all fall below Todd Gurley, Cooper Kupp, and former Bills' teammate Robert Woods, despite Watkins staying healthy all season.
It's not even like Watkins has been bad this season, either, according to our numbers. His 0.91 Reception NEP per target ranks fifth out of 73 receivers with at least 50 targets this season. And his 94% Reception Success Rate, which is the percentage of receptions that contribute positively to NEP, ranks sixth among that group.
It boggles the mind how effective the Rams have managed to be without fully utilizing a healthy Watkins' talents. But opportunity is crucial in fantasy, and at this point, they aren't going to force the ball to Watkins, especially with Woods back in the fold after a three-game absence due to a shoulder injury.
Drop Watkins and snag Keelan Cole off of your waiver wire for a startable option in your fantasy football championship match.
