Fantasy Football: 10 Running Backs to Target in PPR Leagues
Ty Montgomery, Green Bay Packers
Standard Running Back Projection: 38th
PPR Running Back Projection: 38th
PPR Average Draft Position: 9.07 (RB42)
Everyone wants a piece of the guy who is going to end up with the lion's share of touches in the Packers' backfield. Thing is -- no one knows who that guy will be.
If you try hard enough, you can make a good case for each of Ty Montgomery, Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. And if you throw a dart at one of these backs and end up landing a player who seizes big-time volume, it can be a league-winning move.
In PPR formats, all three -- Williams (RB37), Jones (RB41) and Montgomery (RB43) -- are priced similarly. I'm not going to try to pretend I know how this backfield is going to shake out, but TyMont showed last year that he can, at a minimum, be a solid PPR option.
In his three fully healthy games at the start of the season, TyMont racked up reception totals of 4, 6 and 8, with 129 total receiving yards and a receiving touchdown in that span. He got hurt in Week 4, and he never again saw significant volume before going on the shelf permanently in early November.
Jones -- who is suspended for the first two games -- or Williams is probably the ceiling play here. If one of them runs away with the early-down role, they could be a league-winning pick. Or, on the flip side, these three could cannibalize each other into oblivion and be a weekly nightmare to project. Yippee.
Taking any of them is a risk, but you could do worse than rolling the dice on Montgomery in the ninth round. He could be a solid floor option, especially if the former wideout grabs hold of the third-down role, which is exactly what some early camp reports are saying he is doing.
