5 NFL Stats to Know Through Week 2
Patrick Mahomes Throws for NFL Record 10 Touchdowns in 2 Games
After Patrick Mahomes spent his rookie season behind Alex Smith, the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback has wasted no time in announcing himself to the NFL in 2018. After throwing for four touchdowns in the Chiefs' opening day win over their division rival Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes went TWO better -- with six touchdowns -- on Sunday in the Chiefs' win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mahomes now has 10 touchdowns on the young season, the most thrown by a quarterback in an opening two-week stretch in NFL history. It beats the previous record of nine, held jointly by Drew Brees (2009) and Peyton Manning (2013). The New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos both made it to the Super Bowl following those seasons, with the Saints winning Super Bowl XLIV, ironically, against Manning.
Only once before had the Steelers allowed six passing touchdowns in a single game. The other instance was in Week 2 of the 1991 season, when Jim Kelly went 31-for-43 for 363 yards and 6 scores for the Buffalo Bills.
