Sam Darnold Had His 4th Game With Multiple Picks

It was another disappointing day for the New York Jets on offense, and for rookie quarterback Sam Darnold in particular, in their 13-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Darnold completed just 21 of his 39 pass attempts for 229 scoreless yards. He also threw four interceptions and took four sacks. Darnold’s counting stats make for ugly reading, and he was just as disjointed on a per-play basis, according to our advanced metrics. Darnold’s Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back was -0.40, the second lowest of all quarterbacks with at least 10 pass attempts in Week 9. (You can find out more about NEP in our glossary.)

It was Darnold’s fourth game with multiple interceptions in 2018, putting him into a tie for the seventh most multi-pick in a season for a rookie quarterback since 2010. Only three rookie quarterbacks have had as many games with multiple interceptions between Weeks 1 and 9 in a season. Darnold also became the eighth quarterback since 2014 to have at least four interceptions and four sacks in a single game. The most recent occurrence was last week, when Jameis Winston achieved it against the Cincinnati Bengals.
