5 NFL Red Zone Trends to Monitor for Week 15
Derrick Henry Is Finally Taking Over in the Red Zone
Derrick Henry didn't need to be in the red zone for all of the 4 rushing touchdowns he notched in his 238-yard rushing performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, but he did score twice inside the 20, and his workload continues to expand in that area of the field.
Through the first nine weeks of the season, Dion Lewis looked to be the leader of the Tennessee Titans' backfield, no matter where the plays were being run. Over those nine weeks, Lewis and Henry did have an equal number of red zone carries (13), but with 3 targets to Henry's 1, Lewis had a team-high opportunity market share of 25.0% to Henry's 21.9%.
In five games since then, though, Lewis has out-touched Henry in the red zone only once, and Henry has a 51.7% rush attempt market share to Lewis' 31.0%, as well as a slight edge in opportunity market share (30.6% to 28.6%).
That difference is even more pronounced over the last two games. Henry has more opportunities than Lewis in each, with a 47.3% market share to Lewis' 20.8%.
With volume already trending in his direction, and now with the results to back it up (five touchdowns over his last two games), Henry should continue to handle the bulk of the Titans' backfield work in scoring range, giving him some big touchdown upside over the remainder of the season.
