Well, the unfathomable happened in Week 15 -- Frank Gore got hurt. Gore exited early with a foot injury, an ailment which will bring his season to an end.
In his absence this past Sunday, rookie Kalen Ballage erupted, carrying the ball 12 times for 123 yards and a touchdown versus a stout Vikings defense. A 75-yard scoring scamper ballooned the overall stat line, but Ballage worked ahead of Kenyan Drake, who saw just one carry and three targets.
Drake may have taken a backseat due to a shoulder issue that caused him to miss some practice time leading up to the game, so it's not a lock Ballage will have a high-volume role in Week 16. Still, Ballage is worth adding as a potential starting running back, though a Week 16 draw with the Jacksonville Jaguars would make it hard to trust him.
