Since Dan Marino retired, the Miami Dolphins have had 13 starting quarterbacks, with eight of those passers starting at least 10 games. The team just traded away Ryan Tannehill, who had the most starts, passing yards and touchdowns of this group.

Since being taken in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Tannehill started 88 games for the Dolphins, passing for 20,434 yards with 123 touchdowns. However, he hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2015, and he posted an adjusted net yards per attempt mark in excess of 5.91 in just one season of his career.

In 2018, he was atrociously inefficient. Of the 31 quarterbacks with at least 300 drop backs last year, Tannehill had the second-lowest Passing NEP per drop back, at -0.09. He was also sacked on an astonishing 11.3% of his drop backs.

The trade of Tannehill leaves the Dolphins with Luke Falk and Jake Rudock as the only quarterbacks on their depth chart. They have combined for a grand total of five career passing attempts, all of which were made by Ruddock in 2017. He completed three of them for 24 yards and also threw an interception.

While it is likely that the Dolphins will pursue a veteran during the later stages of free agency, they desperately need to invest in the future at the quarterback spot. Now would seem as good a time as any to do so.
