Geno Smith Isn't the Answer

My analysis on Geno Smith over the last year has been brutal. It's been tough. But as they say, the numbers never lie.

After his rookie season, Smith was part of a rare group that didn't pan out in the NFL. His -68.55 Passing NEP placed him in the bottom quarter percentile among rookie quarterbacks since 2000 - a subset that featured players like Blaine Gabbert and Jimmy Clausen. Within the group, only Kyle Orton has produced a respectable career.

Things are more or less continuing for Smith in 2014. Entering Sunday's game against the Bills, Smith had a -10.73 Passing NEP on the year - a score better than last year's pace, but still one of the worst among starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Smith's Passing NEP dropped another 11.59 points on Sunday - only Blake Bortles had a worse performance in Week 8 at the quarterback position.

The problem in New York is that Michael Vick isn't any better of an answer. Entering the week, Vick had a worse Passing NEP score, and was roughly just as bad as Smith against Buffalo.

I'm sorry, Jets fans. It's going to be a long season.
