The Browns Have a Quarterback Controversy

Brian Hoyer hasn't played well this year. After the team's win over Pittsburgh all the way back on October 12th, Hoyer was sitting pretty with a Passing Net Expected Points total of 30.78. His per drop back average was 0.22 which, at the time, was seventh-best in the NFL.

Entering Week 13, Hoyer's season-long Passing NEP was 35.76 with a 0.09 average. In other words, he's only added about five points to the Browns expected scoring total over six games. That seems reasonable considering it's above expectation, but that "expectation" has shifted at the quarterback position given the high level of play we're seeing -- really, Hoyer's been a bottom-tiered quarterback over this time.

And that play continued in Week 13. In the Browns' gross loss, Hoyer threw two picks and zero touchdowns, forcing head coach Mike Pettine to throw Johnny Manziel under center in the fourth quarter. It looks as though this move could be a permanent one, which isn't a bad call considering Hoyer's play. One thing's for sure though: The Browns have a quarterback controversy.
