This isn’t even fair. Tre Mason was a third-round rookie in the 2014 class, and by all rights performed somewhat admirably so far. On 179 rushes, he racked up 765 yards and 4 touchdowns, as well as 148 receiving yards and a touchdown through the air.

When we look at his analytics behind his on-field production, however, it’s easy to see why he is yet another victim of Rams head coach Jeff Fisher’s seeming annual dissatisfaction with his backfield.

Mason racked up a poor -13.62 Rushing NEP in 2014, good for 57th among rushers with at least 50 attempts. His -0.08 per-attempt Rushing NEP tied for 50th place among the same runners. With franchise back Todd Gurley now in the fold, the math becomes fairly simple. Mason will transition out of the lead role in St. Louis, taking more of a deserved change-of-pace gig, and the generational talent, Gurley, will supersede him.
