Ryan Tannehill Will Be a Top-6 Quarterback
Of all the offenses that we expect to take progressive steps forward this season in fantasy football, perhaps none hold the untapped upside held by the Miami Dolphins.
Ryan Tannehill turned in a solid season in 2014, topping 4,000 passing yards and sporting a 27-to-12 touchdown to interception ratio. His efficiency was middling -- he ranked 19th in Passing NEP per play among 37 quarterbacks with at least 250 attempts -- but there are reasons to believe he will improve.
Tannehill finished as the eighth best fantasy quarterback last season, but I’m confident that isn’t his ceiling.
This season, I’m predicting Tannehill as a top-six fantasy quarterback, with upside for even more.
The ancillary weapons exist in Miami for Tannehill to thrive, including Jarvis Landry and Lamar Miller. The Dolphins also added multiple pass-catching weapons in Kenny Stills, Jordan Cameron, Greg Jennings and rookie DeVante Parker. Both Stills and Jennings finished in the top-third of wide receivers with at least 50 targets in terms of Reception NEP per target last season, and Cameron adds a big-bodied vertical threat to stretch the seams.
Building on last year’s success, offensive coordinator Bill Lazor has hinted at a faster offensive tempo which would result in higher play volume, and in turn more opportunity for fantasy goodness.
Tannehill most likely won’t challenge Andrew Luck and Aaron Rodgers for the top fantasy quarterback spot, but I believe he’s a lock to thoroughly outperform his current QB12 average draft position, providing massive draft value for prudent owners.
