Chris Johnson has come a long way in the last month or so, from being an unsigned 30-year old free agent to backing up an injury-prone running back in Andre Ellington on a team with enough talent to make a deep playoff run in the NFC in the Arizona Cardinals.
Now, I've never been that high on Johnson in his career. He's always been a little too boom-or-bust for my taste, as evidenced by him never having exceeded a Rushing Success rate over 42% throughout his career, which is the average rate for all running backs with over 200 carries in a given season since 2009. That includes his 2009 season in which he busted out over 2,500 yards from scrimmage.
But Johnson has clearly inherited some opportunity given the unfortunate PCL injury Ellington suffered on Sunday. While rookie running back David Johnson came away with a receiving touchdown, Johnson received 10 total carries in the game, and that number figures to go up until Ellington returns.
Roster Chris Johnson while Ellington is out so you can plug him in if one of your starting backs has a particularly difficult matchup. The opportunity is there, and Johnson should still be fast enough to be a legitimate home run threat.
