Rishard Matthews is player who has flown under the radar for far too long, and at this point, I'm just not sure why. Despite coming into the season as the Dolphins' fifth receiver on the depth chart, Matthews has become a solid number two receiver in a previously struggling but now ascending passing game.
Through six games, he has been targeted on average around six times per game, and he's already racked up four touchdowns this season. He's been efficient with his work too, sporting a 1.11 Reception NEP per target through Week 6, which ranks third in the league among all wide receivers in the NFL with at least 15 targets. And while the Jarvis Landry-Ryan Tannehill connection got back on track in Week 7, don't expect Matthews to just fade into the background.
Matthews had been on the field for 71.7% of the Dolphins' offensive snaps through Week 6, whereas the third ranking Dolphins' receiver -- Greg Jennings -- had only been on the field for 51.2% of offensive snaps. And he only received three targets in Week 7 because the Dolphins got out to such a huge lead early on that the team basically abandoned the passing game in the second half.
Matthews has clearly carved himself out an important role in the Dolphins' offense, a unit that has seemingly figured out some of their early season woes. That could mean even more production from him moving forward. Let this be the last week he makes this list and go get him.
