The 10 Best NFL Free Agency Signings
Lamar Miller to the Houston Texans
Speaking of expanded roles, this was the best move that was made in free agency from a NEP perspective. Lamar Miller was trapped in a low-usage role in the Miami Dolphins' backfield, but now that he had a chance to find his own situation, he settled on the wide-open pastures (and depth chart) of Texas, with the Houston Texans.
The Texans had the incredible Arian Foster before Miller, but Foster saw his effectiveness dwindle due to injury and wear as well. Shockingly, even from 2012 onward, Lamar Miller has actually out-produced Foster on a per-play basis. His Rushing NEP per play (Miller, 0.00; Foster, -0.02) and Rushing Success Rate (Miller 43.1 percent; Foster 41.0 percent) topped Foster's marks. The only area where Foster excelled over Miller is in Reception NEP per target (Foster 0.16; Miller 0.31). Still, this is about the best way the Texans could have repaired their backfield and was by far one of the savviest free agent moves in 2016.
