5 Late-Round NFL Draft Picks to Target in Fantasy Football Rookie Drafts
Michael Thomas, WR, Los Angeles Rams
Taken in the sixth round, the "other" Michael Thomas, who was snubbed without an invite to this year's combine, was drafted with the 177th overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams. The Southern Miss prospect finished his final season with 71 receptions, 1,391 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns and now steps into a questionable receiver depth chart in LA.
Thomas has a unique physical profile at 6'1", 200 pounds, with a broad jump that places him in the 95th percentile. However, the rest of his measurements from his pro day came in a bit more below average.
Thomas' physical attributes aren't about to wow the coaching staff (although his highlight reel will), but the Rams' wide receivers haven't been what you'd call electrifying. Their top fantasy option -- Tavon Austin -- finished as the WR28 in PPR formats yet ranked as the 92nd-most prolific receiver last year in Reception NEP. There's certainly room for improvement on this depth chart.
Austin has two years remaining on his rookie year contract, but Kenny Britt, Brian Quick, and Stedman Bailey all have one year remaining on their current contracts, leaving a potential opening for Thomas. Drafting Thomas is a play for the long game but may be a smart one as the Rams continue to develop their quarterback of the future.
