Devon Cajuste, Wide Receiver/Tight End

One of the weirder hybrid players in this draft class, Devon Cajuste came out of Stanford having played wide receiver but perhaps will fit in the NFL as more of a move tight end, a la his new teammate Blake Bell. Perhaps the best comparison for Cajuste is Carolina Panthers' Devin Funchess, who was a “tweener” at this position too. Whichever place he plays, though, he’s an intriguing talent.

Standing 6’4” and weighing 234 pounds, with 10 ¾” hands, Cajuste is the perfect size to make a splash as a big possession receiver in the pros. He ran a 4.62 40 Yard Dash at the NFL Combine, with a 36” Vertical Jump and 10’3” Broad Jump, to go along with a wide receiver position-best 6.49 3 Cone and a surprising 4.20 20 Yard Shuttle. Cajuste had lackluster production in college, totaling just 61 catches for 940 yards and 9 touchdowns over his last two seasons at Stanford. He has a great ability to box out opponents, both as a red zone target and a blocker, and can be a versatile chess piece for teams.

And for the San Francisco 49ers, this is exactly what they needed. After losing Anquan Boldin to free agency, trading Vernon Davis, and having little incumbent pass-catching talent left, Cajuste could be an instant impact for this team. He actually could play a similar role as Boldin, being an enormous possession player in the slot, while Torrey Smith blows the top off the defense. Aside from Smith, there is a dearth of proven value in this offense. Cajuste might slot in as the fourth- to sixth-best wide receiver and anywhere from the best to third- or fourth-best tight end. His training camp will be very important.
