7. 2012 Jacksonville Jaguars

nERD: -12.74
Record: 2-14, 4th in AFC South

When Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan bought the team in 2012, he knew it was a franchise in disarray. The Jags had gone just 5-11 the season before and hoped to find some new life under first-year head coach Mike Mularkey. It was about as complete a reset button as a team could ask for.

Then they put together the second-worst offensive season in the league by Adjusted Offensive NEP per play. Quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne were fifth- and sixth-worst in the league by Passing NEP per drop back. Running backs Maurice Jones-Drew was 34th and backup Rashad Jennings was 54th out of the 55 running backs in Total NEP per play, with 0.01 and -0.14 rates, respectively. Both ended their seasons on the injured reserve.

Wide receiver Cecil Shorts was the only admirable finish that year, at 17th in Total NEP per play among the 85 qualifying wide receivers.

The defense, too, was totally inadequate. They ranked 29th in the league in Adjusted Defensive NEP per play with a 0.10 rate, despite adding a ton of interesting pieces. They drafted defensive end Andre Branch (who ended his rookie year on injured reserve) and linebacker Brandon Marshall (who has gone on to be a starter with the Broncos) and signed defensive end Jason Babin and cornerback Aaron Ross, among others.

This wasn’t enough to pull their team out of the slump, though, and they earned the second overall selection in 2013’s NFL Draft.
