3 Fantasy Football Quarterback Streamer Options for Week 9
Quarterback streaming isn't for everyone, but if you're in a standard league -- like a 10- or 12-team league that features just one starting signal caller -- grabbing potentially productive quarterbacks in good matchups off the waiver wire is often doable.
Sure, you won't have the luxury of setting it and forgetting it with Patrick Mahomes as your quarterback, but when the top-end signal-callers draw a tough matchup, their upside can oftentimes be matched by a waiver-wire option in a more favorable situation.
If you're looking for some quarterback options from the waiver wire -- regardless of league size -- we have you covered. Here are three quarterbacks rostered in fewer than roughly 40% of Yahoo leagues who are in good spots this week.
Justin Fields, Bears
Yahoo Roster Percentage: 42%
Justin Fields is going to play his way out of streamer consideration pretty soon. In truth, he probably should have already, as he's the QB11 for the year and has scored at least 17 fantasy points in four straight games. He might wind up being a low-end QB1 the rest of the way.
Fields is doing work with his legs. He's run for at least 20 yards in every game and has posted at least 47 rushing yards in six straight. That gives both his floor and ceiling a boost. He's also found paydirt as a runner in two straight as the Chicago Bears continue to keep him in the mix at the goal line. Fields now has 15 carries inside the 20 and 6 attempts inside the 5.
Chicago is taking on the Miami Dolphins this week. Miami has allowed the seventh-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks (19.6) as well as the fifth-most rushing yards. Fields should be able to keep rolling in Week 9.
Marcus Mariota, Falcons
Yahoo Roster Percentage: 26%
Marcus Mariota has been awesome this year. He's the QB8 and keeps churning out serviceable fantasy weeks.
In Week 9, the Atlanta Falcons face the Los Angeles Chargers. This game is shaping up to be one of the better fantasy environments of the week, as it sports a 49.5-point total and 3.0-point spread.
Similar to Fields, Mariota is getting it done as a runner. He's run for 31-plus yards in four consecutive games and has three rushing tuddies on the year. The ceiling can be lacking, but Mariota hasn't been a week-killer very often, producing at least 12.06 fantasy points in every game but one.
Our model really likes Mariota this week, projecting him to amass 16.4 points and ranking him as the QB13.
Ryan Tannehill, Titans
Yahoo Roster Percentage: 14%
Ryan Tannehill's roster percentage has plunged of late as he sat in Week 8 due to injury. As long as he's healthy enough to play, Tannehill is an interesting option this week against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Tannehill's fantasy outlook is typically stunted by how little the Tennessee Titans pass -- third-lowest pass rate (44.6%) -- but the Titans might have to air it out more than usual in this clash with KC. The Chiefs are favored by a whopping 12.5 points.
Tanny has had some fantasy success in previous matchups with the Chiefs. He generated 19.4 points against them in 2021 and 18.94 points in a 2019 matchup.
I have Tannehill a notch below Fields and Mariota -- especially until we get news that he's definitely playing -- but he's a quality QB2 this week.
