Panthers' Mike Davis "will still play" when Christian McCaffrey (ankle) returns
Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said running back Mike Davis "will still play" when Christian McCaffrey returns from the ankle injury that has prevented him from playing since Week 2.
He added that Davis has shown that he "deserves" to play, but this statement has to be taken with a grain of coach-speak-salt. McCaffrey has played on nearly every down for the Panthers over the past few seasons and is not likely to cede much work to Davis no matter how well Davis plays.
Davis has operated as the Panthers' irrefutable RB1 since McCaffrey's injury, but he has been dealing with a slight ankle injury of his own over the past two games and has been noticeably less efficient. He'll have to play exceedingly well in Week 8 for the Panthers to carve out a significant role for him after McCaffrey's return.
