Chiefs' Kadarius Toney underwent knee surgery

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney underwent a procedure Tuesday to clean up cartilage in his knee, per head coach Andy Reid.

What It Means:

Toney required the procedure after he tweaked his knee while fielding punts before Sunday's training camp practice. The 2021 first-round pick was expected to compete for the No. 1 receiver role in his first full season with the team, but Reid said Toney's status for Week 1 is now uncertain. Depending on how long Toney is sidelined, it could allow 2022 second-round pick Skyy Moore and 2023 second-rounder Rashee Rice to earn larger early-season roles. Toney failed to play more than 10 games in each of his first two seasons due to various injuries, but he was extremely efficient on limited playing time with the Chiefs after being acquired in the middle of last year.

Toney is the WR49 in numberFire's preseason rankings and our models project him for 83.7 targets, 55.1 receptions, 633.8 yards, and 4.62 touchdowns this season, which is right in line with our projections for Marquez Valdes-Scantling (WR46) and Moore (WR51). From Weeks 9-18 with the Chiefs last season, Toney only logged 104 snaps in seven games, but he was elite with 2.44 yards per route run and a 24.3% target rate per routes run.
