Ameer Abdullah not expected to be workhorse back for Lions
Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah is not expected to play a workhorse role this season, head coach Jim Caldwell said.
Caldwell explained he doesn't want Abdullah "carrying the ball 30 times in a ballgame," which makes sense, as no one in the NFL sees 30 carries a game. However, the head coach was clear with his message. "Do I think he's durable enough to do it? Absolutely. Do I think he's strong enough to do it? Absolutely," Caldwell said. "But I just don't think that's his cup of tea." Abdullah is expected to lead the Detroit backfield in touches most weeks, but Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner and possibly Dwayne Washington figure to see some work as well.
In Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts, our models have Abdullah projected for 51 rushing yards and 0.26 touchdowns on 12 carries, as well as 2 catches for 13 yards through the air.
