James Conner adds rushing depth for Steelers at 105th overall
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Pittsburgh running back James Conner with the 105th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Big bruiser Conner (6'2", 233 pounds) took college football by storm as a 2014 sophomore, earning ACC Player of the Year, only to tear his right MCL one game into his junior season. Conner was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma later that year, yet remarkably returned to football. While a great story, Conner’s post-cancer tape was that of a plodding grinder, lacking burst and winning purely on straight-line force. Conner should fit as an early-down thumper with short-yardage and clock-killing value behind star Le'Veon Bell.
Conner's 2016 rushing line came in at 1,092 yards on 216 carries (5.06 yards per tote) with 16 touchdowns. He also set a career high with 21 receptions. Conner is no threat to Bell, whose 0.07 Rushing Net Expected Points per attempt were seventh-most among the 42 running backs with at least 100 carries last year.
