4 Daily Fantasy Hockey Stacks for 11/21/19
When playing NHL DFS -- much like MLB DFS -- stacking is key. Having multiple players from the same team, who correlate together, can give your lineup upside and help you maximize potential points.
You can roster up to four players from the same team in NHL, and you should look to have players from the same forward line or power-play unit together. Shared ice time is the key, as it will maximize their ability to contribute to real-life goals with each other, ultimately leading to more fantasy points for us.
Generally, we don't see late scratches in the NHL, and the team's lines are confirmed at practice or before the game. Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com or DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team.
Columbus Blue Jackets
It's not often I look towards the Columbus Blue Jackets, but they make a ton of sense tonight. Columbus holds a 3.35 implied goal total tonight, as they are at home to host the Detroit Red Wings, a team we've been able to attack all season.
In all honesty, the Blue Jackets aren't an amazing offensive team at all -- they have scored the fewest goals in the league this season. So if they "aren't good," why look at them as a stacking option tonight?
Well, it's a few things. As I said, their matchup is great against the Red Wings, but more importantly, the prices on the Blue Jackets' players are ideal tonight. We have a 13-game slate, and there are some seriously expensive stacks we want to pay up for, which is why the Blue Jackets are in play tonight.
Boone Jenner ($4,200) has struggled offensively this season, but his price is cheap tonight. Oliver Bjorkstrand ($5,100) is averaging almost three shots per game and could be too cheap for his role right now. Gustav Nyquist ($5,500) rounds out the second forward line. The latter two of this group are on the first power-play together with Zach Werenski ($5,700), who could be used in all formats. This four-man stack has each player coming in under $6K, making roster construction that much easier tonight.
Boston Bruins
It's the Boston Bruins, they're at home, and they have a high implied goal total (3.52). Easy spot.
The good news for the Bruins is that they are getting their top-line center Patrice Bergeron ($7,800) back after he missed their two most recent games. This brings the best forward line in hockey back together, and they're a near lock for multiple points on a nightly basis. The other members of that line are David Pastrnak ($9,100), who has 34 points in only 21 games this season, along with Brad Marchand ($8,400), who hasn't licked anyone's face this season -- which is a plus -- and he is averaging over one point per game.
They are up against the Buffalo Sabres, who got off to a hot start this season -- as is a tradition for them -- and have since taken a sharp nosedive, which is also a tradition. As you can see here, the Sabres started the season strongly in terms of xGoals Differential per game but have been rolling on the negative side for over a month now. It makes sense since their Shot Attempt Differential has also followed the same trajectory, downward over the past month.
The Bruins are the better team here, so don't think twice.
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche are missing two of their top three players, but that simply doesn't matter to them.
In their past five games, the Avalanche have five wins, scoring three goals or more in each game. This is due in part to their top-line center Nathan MacKinnon ($8,800), who has nine points and 22 shots in his last five games. It helps that he is getting production from his new linemates, Andre Burakovsky ($5,000), who has 5 goals and 10 shots in his last five games, along with Joonas Donskoi ($5,200), who has 5 total points and 10 shots in that same time. On a 13-game slate where the Avalanche are on the road, they shouldn't see too much ownership.
They have a modest 2.93 implied goal total tonight -- the 17th-highest on the slate. If they weren't on the road, they would be a higher priority, but that's the reason I like them tonight. Even in a loss, MacKinnon and this line could post multiple points and come in at very low ownership. Also, consider adding future Calder Memorial Trophy winner Cale Makar ($5,100), who is the defender on the first power-play unit.
Dallas Stars
After starting the season with only one win in their first nine games, the Dallas Stars have turned things around in a hurry.
A 1-9 start is terrible, but since then, the Stars have gone 11-2, putting them right back in the mix. They have changed up their forward lines a bit over the past few weeks, but their first power-play is still intact, which is where you want to focus your stack.
Their matchup is also elite tonight, as they are up against the Winnipeg Jets, who are in the bottom-10 of the league in Corsi Against and the number of High-Danger-Scoring-Chances allowed per 60 minutes. This shouldn't come as a surprise, since all three of the Jets' defensive pairings are rated 21st or lower out of 31.
The Stars have an implied goal total of only 3.05, which I personally think is far too low for how well they've been playing. If that is the case, the first power-play looks even better tonight: Tyler Seguin ($7,700), Joe Pavelski ($6,400), Alexander Radulov ($6,700), and Esa Lindell ($4,100).
