NHL Daily Fantasy Helper: Wednesday 12/7/22
NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.
Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters. Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.
Let's jump in and take a look at today's slate and some players to consider for your lineups.
Goalie to Target
Stuart Skinner ($8,000): The Edmonton Oilers are primed for a bounce-back game against the lowly Arizona Coyotes tonight. The Oilers have lost two of their last three games and are looking to find a bit of consistency, which is what they should be able to do with this favorable matchup. That's why we see them as -280 home favorites, giving clear win equity to their goalie.
The Coyotes come in scoring just 1.90 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the second-worst in the league. They don't pose too much of a threat on offense, and with their defense allowing 2.83 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, the Oilers' offense should be in a spot to pile up the goals and grab the win.
High-Salaried Skaters
Tage Thompson ($10,100): The Buffalo Sabres have an elite matchup for goals tonight, and Thompson should be in the middle of that. Thompson has been a true star for the Sabres this season and comes in with 15 NHL points and a whopping 49 shots on goal in his last 10 games. Their offense is rolling right now and comes in with a 3.83 implied goal total, which is the second-highest on the slate.
They are scoring 2.93 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the seventh-best in the league, and that should be on full display tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. This season, the Blue Jackets find themselves dead last in the league in both goals allowed (3.55) and Corsi Against (65.76), both per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations.
Thompson is the center on the top line and on the first power-play for the Sabres, putting him in a prime spot for a multi-point performance tonight.
Timo Meier ($8,700): If there is any player who is "due" for a goal, it's Timo Meier of the San Jose Sharks. Meier leads the NHL in shots on goal this season -- averaging 4.7 shots on goal per game -- yet, he's not even in the top 20 for goals scored. This is shown over his last six games, where he has 22 shots on goal but hasn't found the back of the net. The chances will continue to present themselves to Meier, as he is on the first forward line and the first power-play for the Sharks.
The matchup against the Vancouver Canucks tonight has a 6.5 over/under and with both teams in the league's bottom four for the most goals allowed per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, we probably won't be seeing too much defense tonight. This is the ideal situation for Meier to continue his offensive pressure and finally light the lamp tonight.
Value Skaters
T.J. Oshie ($5,500): A soft matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers puts the Washington Capitals in a great spot to be viable in all formats. The Flyers have allowed three goals or more in 13 of their 15 games, making them a clear defense to target.
Oshie is on the second forward line and the first power-play unit, coming in with 5 NHL points, 20 shots on goal, and 7 blocked shots in his last 10 games. Ideally, stacking Oshie with Alex Ovechkin ($8,100), Evgeny Kuznetsov ($5,900), and John Carlson ($7,500) will put you in a great spot for a high-upside stack.
Ilya Mikheyev ($5,200): As I noted with Meier, the Canucks at Sharks matchup is a spot where we should see plenty of scoring. You should be looking to get exposure to this game in multiple ways, and Mikheyev is a solid option for a bit of value. He is seeing time on the second forward line and the second power-play unit, which has allowed him to rack up 7 NHL points and 22 shots on goal in his last 10 games.
